Willem van Zyl is verlede week oorlede aan pankreaskanker. Hilde Eiselen het vir Henning geskryf: Just a month short of his 69th birtday. He was diagnosed in December 2022. Treatment followed, and there were times of hope, but the pancreas is an irreplaceable vital organ. He asked me to visit him just before Christmas 2023, to say our goodbyes.
He died peacefully at his home in Swindon in the UK with his loving family. I am waiting to hear what the funeral arrangements are. He is survived by his wife Cecilia, three wonderful sons, three daughters-in-law, and 6 grandchildren. He was a great man and will leave a major void in the lives of all who loved him.
He and I stayed in touch since we were 16. I don’t know what I will do on my birthday this year when Willem does not call to congratulate me.
