After leaving Menlopark High, I went to Tuks to study Anthropology. Shortly after graduating, I met an English hydrogeologist called Chris. We instantly had a great connection. We got married in 1979, with a baby girl (Gail) following soon afterwards. We moved to the UK for a year while Chris completed his Master’s degree. We returned to SA in 1984. We had two more children, Michael and Jane, two years apart. We also moved from Johannesburg to Durban and enjoyed many trips to the beach as a family.
In 1991, Chris’s work took us back to the UK, and we moved to a scenic town in Cambridgeshire. At the beginning, it was tough to adjust to the colder weather and the shorter daylight hours in winter, but gradually we acclimatized. Sadly, my husband Chris passed away in 2001.
In the UK, I worked as a translator for the South African Embassy, and then as a Principal Examiner for Cambridge University for twenty-two years. I also worked in a local senior school as a cover teacher. I retired two years ago.
Now that I’ve retired, my kids and my grandchildren keep me busy. My son Michael has his own business, Jane is a pharmacist and Gail is a patent attorney. Jane and her husband have two little boys, aged 1 and 3; and since Jane has returned to work, I’ve been looking after the little ones. They keep me on my toes!
I hope you have a great reunion!
All the best,
Linda
